    Tribhuwan Kewat

    Tribhuwan Kewat is a 57 year old, physically disabled person who has an amputation on his left hand below of the elbow joint. Twelve          years           ago, unfortunately he lost his hand while operating a wheat cutting machine in the field. He is the father of three sons and lives with wife, sons, two daughters in law, and five grandchildren. Tribhuwan has land for farming and cultivates                  seasonal vegetables and sells in the local market. He can ride bicycle and carry vegetable to the local market by himself. He was feeling afraid to talk with other so he kept his soreness and happiness on his mind. He did not share with each other. Before the project started, Tribhuwan was always engaged in fieldwork cultivating vegetables. He avoided interacting with the people and don’t like to talk with neighbor too. He did not able to connect with other persons with disabilities in his ward and rural municipality. "He looks physically disabled, but his soul and mind are strong. He learned to overcome challenges. His mindset has changed, and he is trying to share his skills with people with disabilities."

    Introduction to the Project

    A woman mother of children with disabilities was receiving services from PNL. When PNL organized ward level meetings in Mayadevi Rural Municipality and invited other persons with disabilities from the community, Tribhuwan came into contact with PNL during the ward level meeting.

    Involvement in the Project

    Tribhuwan participated in ward level and rural municipality meetings. During the first 3-4 meetings, he did not show much interest. Later, he became the chairperson of the ward-level committee. He helped persons with disabilities to inform the notice of the ward and rural municipality office and supported their participation in different kind of program .

    Initially, he did not give time for meetings. However, he gradually changed by participating in the program. He has started to manage his time between farming, and selling vegetables in the market. He has received orientation on disabilities, observation visit and training on leadership development, organization management, good governance, disabled rights and so on.

    Outcomes/Changes

    Tribhuwan is now able to speak more confidently than before. He became able to share of his thoughts among people. He has helped to the process of obtaining disability identity cards for children and persons with disabilities in his ward. He has also counseled and spoken with newly identified persons with disabilities and their parents about the importance of unity through group involvement.

    Tribhuwan is an active member of the rural municipality level committee. He actively participate in the group meeting and raises current issues by the group and discuss effectively. Then they make plan to visit to the ward office and rural municipality to advocate for disabled. After participating in observation visits to different organizations, he has learned many new things, which have brought positive changes in him. He is doing hard work more than before. He is now self-employed and has also involved his wife in a local group. By taking a loan from the group, and he has expand his vegetable farming. People in the community have started appreciating his hard work despite his disability. Now he feels very happy to be a member of the disability committee.

    Now, he actively participates in ward and rural municipality level meetings of persons with disabilities. He has become more positive and has started raising voice for the rights of persons with disabilities.

    PNL is a local nonprofit organization established in 2056 which is located in Butwal-9, Rupandehi. It main purpose are Rehabilitation Program for people with physical disability, Health care and Rehabilitation program for leprosy affected people and Empowerment for Transformation of Marginalized Community.
